EARSHOT: An international, multicentre prospective cohort study evaluating the risk of hearing loss in children receiving antibiotic treatment.

This multicentre cohort study across Australia and New Zealand will examine the impact of aminoglycosides on hearing loss in children.

The study aims to:

  • Define the risk of hearing loss with increasing aminoglycoside exposure.
  • Identify serum biomarkers that correlate with hearing loss.
  • Define the risk of hearing loss in children with/without predisposing mitochondrial DNA variants.
  • Evaluate the cost and cost-effectiveness of potential prevention strategies.
